3. Attend a FlyGirl camp - here you will get information from our staff on gyms in your area and can be recommended directly based on your skills and your great attitude!

ELEVATE your Team
Ask FlyGirl President Mandy Cheetham your cheer and hip hop questions!

Dear FlyGirl,

I have been on my high school team for three years.  I used to be one of the best flyers on the team and this year my coach decided to put me as a base.  It is really hard because I am not strong enough to lift the girls who are the new flyers on the team and I am thinking of quitting.  How do I get my coach to understand that she is making the wrong decision for the team by having me in the wrong position?

Emma, Toronto

Dear Emma,

When I was cheerleading I always wanted to be a flyer.  On some teams it was beneficial for me to do that, on other teams it was not.  Choosing who flys and who bases is very difficult for a coach and totally depends on the overall composition of the team.  The coach needs to consider ALL of the athletes  they have on their team and what their strengths and weaknesses are in order to maximize the potential of the group.  The athletes who are working with you as your flyers may not have the ability to base at all.  It says a lot about your strength, coach-ability, attitude and versatility if your coach had enough faith in you to ask you to learn a completely new position this year.  You should be proud of your accomplishments and try to see your self in the larger context of the team and how you contribute to the overall successes.  Also, as a base who was a flyer, you can help the new flyers to learn by giving them pointers.  Most importantly, you will grow as an athlete in this new position and be a better flyer when you have the opportunity to do it again because you will now understand what the bases experience!!!!!

One of the most important things to remember is that size is not an indicator of ability.  For all positions strength (especially core strength) is an absolute necessity for success.  If you all work together as a team to get stronger you will open up more opportunities for people to try different positions.

Your whole world will change when you change your mind.

Cheers!
Mandy

Summer Fund-raising

Summer is a great time to work on the areas of team building that you don't have time to do during busy competition and game season.  Here are some ways you can get your team together for a little pre-camp bonding to build some stunts and your bank account!

1. Team Yard Sale

Pros: lots of ways to make cash, do a little spring cleaning, and hang out with your team!
Cons: be sure that you pre-arrange for everything that is not sold to be picked up by a junk collecting company. It is not fair for the host to have to dispose of your un-wanted items.
Make Sure: to promote it (signs, newspaper ads, demos on the corner to attract customers, invitations to your friends and family), to have extras (barbecue for hungry shoppers, donation jar for additional help)

2. Car Wash

Pros: Great money maker in the right location on the right day
Cons: Make sure to book locations early as many of the best spots are busy every weekend.  Be sure that all washers are sensitive to caring for the cars and don't damage anyone's property with their coat zippers, keys or anything that could scratch paint.
Make Sure: to promote!  Have every cheerleader bring at least three friends to have their car washed. To price it right! Make sure your prices are lower than other car washing places.

3. Festival Performances

Pros: With so many local festivals and activities there are tons looking for entertainment.  Contact the local festivals and see if they are hiring any more acts.
Cons: Be sure you have enough people committed to the performance to keep your promises to the event co-coordinators. They will spend money on advertising your group and you may be liable for damages if you do not show up with the number of people you promised.  Be sure that the festival is family appropriate.
Make Sure: To communicate with festival organizers in a professional manner.  You can make up-wards of $1000 per performance with the right festival!
